As we look forward to celebrating National Dog Day, I am celebrating something else today. I am delighted to be starting today as part of the Festive Friday Design Team. It is a great honour to have been asked. I hope you will take the time to look at all the design team’s inspiration and we would love to see what you create using the Inspo list. It doesn’t have to include a Dog, or be in any way dog related. It just needs to contain 3 things from that list.
This Challenge has been created to celebrate National Dog day in the United States on August 26th.
Like many of you, I am sure, I am a dog lover. My heart belongs to one particular pooch, who is now a very old boy and starting to struggle to get around. Our family dog, Taz. He came to us as a rescue dog over 12 years ago and has given us all such joy and pleasure in that time.
You may be able to see in my project, that he has been my inspiration.
My Project
I went well over 3 elements from the Inspo list on this one. My project includes:
- Red
- Black
- Heart
- paw print
- Dog
- Emboosing
It, of course, had to be a black dog, but he needed his white highlights. Having punched the dog shape out of black card, I added these highlights with a white chalk marker.
Here are the measurements:
Card/Paper | A4 Cardstock | Letter Size Cardstock | |
Card Base | Real Red | 14.9cm x 21cm | 5 1/2 ” x 8 1/2″ |
Layer 1 | Basic Black | 14.4cm x 10cm | 5 1/4 ” x 4″ |
Layer 2 | DSP -Playful Pets | 13.4 x 9cm | 4 3/4″ x 3 1/2″ |
Layer 3 | Real Red | 12.4cm x 8cm | 4 1/2″ x 3 1/4″ |
Layer 4 | Whisper White | 11.9cm x 7.5cm | 4 3/8″ x 3 1/8″ |
Inside Layer | Whisper White | 14.4cm x10cm | 5 1/4″ x 4″ |
I cut the large stitched heart from the centre of the basic black cardstock (layer 1) and the red heart from the centre of the red cardstock (layer 3)
As I stuck the layers onto the card base, I placed them at an angle, one leaning one way, the next the other. I die cut the word “Woof!” from both red and black card using the Playful Alphabets dies and stuck them together to form a shadow effect. Both the word and the hearts were stuck to the whisper white layer with Tombow glue, before adding the dog with dimensionals. The greeting, from the “Lovely You” stamp set was heat embossed with White Stampin’ Emboss powder on black card, before being punched with the Lovely Labels Pick a Punch.
The dog builder punch also punches out these cute little hearts. I find them useful in so many projects and 2 red ones and a black one gave the finishing touch to this one.
Inside the Card
As I was die cutting the letters for the front of the card, it struck me that the centres of the “O”s had the potential to become a paw print. I cut an extra black O and combined my three centres with a small, die cut, scalloped heart (upside down) . Then I stuck them onto a real red stitched circle and they became the perfect embellishment for the inside of the card. I simply stamped the sentiment in black to finish.
More Pets
This isn’t the only Dog card I have been creating this week. On my Facebook live on Monday, I was playing with the Playful Pets Designer Series Paper and I created, not only a card featuring dogs, but another featuring cats.
You can see those cards being created here;
