Textures and Layers on a Monochromatic Card

On this post I am looking at textures and layers on a monochromatic card.

Each week Demonstrators from the Crafty Collaborations Community take part in a Monochromatic Insta Hop over on Instagram. Each week a different colour is chosen and the participants create a monochromatic card.

This week we used Soft Sea Foam.

Soft Sea Foam is one of those colours I reach for when I want something calm, gentle, and easy on the eye—soft without being bland, and fresh without shouting

The trick with monochromatic cards is letting texture and layers do the heavy lifting, and that’s exactly what I’ve leaned into with today’s project.

🧰 What I Used

• Soft Sea Foam card base and cardstock & Basic White cardstock
• Soft Sea Foam ink
• Etched Autumn and Creative Haven stamp sets
• Gathering Leaves embossing folder for texture
• Adhesive and dimensionals
• White ribbon and twine & a Soft Sea Foam Stampin’ Blend to colour them
• A couple of subtle embellishments (because I can’t quite resist!)

✂️ How the Card Came Together

I started with a Soft Sea Foam card base.

Next, I ran a panel of Soft Sea Foam cardstock through an embossing folder.
When you’re only using one colour, texture really becomes your best friend—and this is where the card starts to come alive. having distressed the edges and adding some ink blending around the edge, I matted this onto a distressed Basic White mat to help the colours pop.

I stamped a panel of Soft Sea Foam card with Soft Sea Foam ink and the Etched Autumn Background stamp. Keeping the ink and cardstock the same shade gives a lovely soft, almost tone-on-tone effect. I again matted this onto a distressed Basic White mat.

Once these mats had been stuck together I wrapped some ribbon around them and then added a bow of twine. Both the white ribbon and the white twine had been coloured with a Dark Soft Sea Foam Stampin’ Blend.

For the sentiment panel, I heat embossed a sentiment in white on a distressed Soft Sea Foam mat to keep everything cohesive, then popped this focal element up with dimensionals for just a bit of depth.

To finish, I added a couple of simple embellishments—nothing too sparkly, just enough to catch the light without distracting from the calm feel of the card.

🌿 A Few Monochrome Tips

• If you’re working with one colour, use lots of texture
• Dimensionals make a huge difference in adding interest
• Keep embellishments minimal so the colour can shine

✨ Final Thoughts

Monochromatic cards are such a great reminder that you don’t need lots of colours to create something beautiful.
Soft Sea Foam is incredibly versatile, and I can see myself using this style again for thank-you cards, sympathy cards, or gentle words of encouragement.
