Using an Embossing Folder to Create a Letterpress Effect.

Using an Embossing Folder to Create a Letterpress Effect.

There’s something so satisfying about combining texture and colour — and this card does exactly that!

For today’s project I used the Sunflower 3D Embossing Folder to create a beautiful letterpress-style background. Instead of simply embossing the panel, I added colour directly to the design using a brayer and sponge daubers before running it through my Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine.

✨ How To Add Colour to An Embossing Folder

I lightly brayered Daffodil Delight ink onto the raised side of the embossing folder.
Using sponge daubers, I added Granny Apple Green to the leaves and Pumpkin Pie to the sunflower centres.
I placed Basic White cardstock inside the folder and ran it through the machine.

This creates a soft, debossed letterpress look where the colour is pressed into the design — giving both texture and depth.

I finished the panel with some subtle black splatters using a Basic Black Stampin’ Blend for contrast and interest.

🌿 Finishing Touches

The sentiment is from Simply Said, heat embossed in white onto Basic Black cardstock.
A simple black twine bow adds balance.
Silver Drusy Adhesive-Backed Embellishments bring a little sparkle without overpowering the design.

The card is mounted onto a Granny Apple Green mat to pull everything together, before adding it to a Thick Basic White card base.

Why I Love This Technique

Using ink inside an embossing folder gives you:

Extra dimension
Controlled colour placement
A completely different look from standard embossing

It’s such a versatile technique — and works beautifully with detailed 3D folders like this sunflower design.
